MOP - Macau Pataca currency

The Macau Pataca (MOP) is the official currency of Macau, a Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China. It is issued by the Monetary Authority of Macau and is pegged to the Hong Kong Dollar (HKD) at a rate of 1.03 MOP per 1 HKD, making the two currencies interchangeable within Macau. The name "pataca" comes from the Portuguese word for "peso," reflecting Macau's colonial past under Portuguese rule. Despite the pataca being the official currency, Hong Kong Dollars are widely accepted in Macau at a 1:1 rate in many establishments. The currency is further subdivided into 100 avos, with banknotes issued in various denominations ranging from 10 to 1,000 MOP.
