The Yemeni Rial (YER) is the official currency of Yemen, issued by the Central Bank of Yemen. It was introduced in 1962, replacing the East African Shilling and other local currencies. Due to ongoing political and economic instability, the Rial has experienced significant fluctuations in value, with regional disparities in exchange rates between government-controlled and rebel-held areas. Despite these challenges, the YER remains the primary medium of exchange for daily transactions in Yemen’s agriculture- and remittance-dependent economy.
